02 Oct When Three Cities Decide to Share the Stage
Can competing destinations work together without undermining what sets them apart? That was the challenge when Cape Town Tourism joined forces with visitBerlin and NYC Tourism to launch the world’s first trilateral city marketing partnership.
Simplify
Travel reminds us that what unites us is stronger than what divides us, because at the heart of every journey is the search for connection, humanity and belonging. Instead of fighting for attention, why not share it? The question became, how do three cities, each with bold personalities, speak with one voice without losing their individuality? In a world increasingly divided, we saw an opportunity to model something different, cities as collaborators rather than competitors.
Clarify
Our Innovation Roadmap guided us toward a solution through an iterative process, essential given that nothing like this had been attempted before. The result was One Small World, a documentary-style travelogue highlighting social wellness, narrative dining and immersive entertainment that seamlessly blended the three cities into one traveller experience. Instead of a corporate partnership, it felt like three friends showing each other around their hometowns. The film captured the essence of cultural exchange, celebrating the shared values and unique quirks of each city without diluting what made them distinct.
Amplify
Launching in New York on World Tourism Day 2024, the film gained global traction, picking up media coverage and initiating conversations about tourism as a force for collaboration and peace. The combined reach that each city garnered was three-fold compared to marketing independently. It also drew attention to a larger theme: if the world’s top three cities (Time Out 2024) could join hands, it proved that competition and collaboration can co-exist side by side and redefine global tourism as we move towards a more interconnected future.

Please note that this was developed during my tenure as CMO of Cape Town Tourism. I now share the work through travelstitcher to demonstrate the kind of future-ready solutions I continue to develop today.
